現在, 私は●●大学付属病院にて診療ならびに臨床分離株の抗生物質感受性などを調べているのですが, 分離菌のひとつに“Streptococcus oralis”が出てきました。バックグラウンド (名前の由来など) を知りたいため調べているのですが, 残念ながらよくわかりません。よろしければお教えください。1982年にBridgeとSneathによって見つけられたところまでは分かったのですが, 参考文献などもわかりませんでした。よろしくお願いします。

　Streptococcus oralisはヒトの口腔内に常在するα-溶血レンサ球菌(“viridans streptococci”)の一種で, 細菌性心内膜炎や菌血症を引き起こすことのある菌種です。菌名の由来についてはBridgeらの論文に以下のように記載されています。

“Streptococcus oralis sp. nov. (or・a’・lis. M. L. adj. oralis, of the mouth).

つまり, 口腔内“oralcavity”から検出されたことがその理由のようです。S. oralis という菌名の記載は, 1982年のBridgeらの論文が最初ですが, 1985年になって以前に“Streptococcus mitior”やStreptococcus sanguis _と呼ばれてた菌種が, 新たにS. oralisとして承認されたという経緯もあります。現在の16S rDNA塩基配列の比較に基づいた分類では, レンサ球菌属の中の“mitis group”に含まれ, Streptococcus mitisやStreptococcus pneumoniaeと近縁関係にあるとされています。
